Ford F150 Window Won’t Go Up Or Down – [Easy Fixes]

Is your Ford F150 window stuck and refusing to go up or down? It can be extremely frustrating. But sometimes the cause might be simpler than you think!

In some cases, it can be just a simple, obvious obstruction that is blocking the window movement. If that’s not the issue, other reasons can include problems with the electrical system, window switch, regulator, or motor.

In today’s guide, I will comprehensively discuss each potential cause and will provide easy-to-follow solutions. Let’s find out the issue and fix it efficiently!

Note: The issue shows on the following Ford F150 models: 2009, 2015, 2018, 2021, 2023, and 2024.

5 Reasons Why Ford F150 Window Won’t Go Up Or Down

The major reason why your Ford F150 window won’t go up or down includes an apparent blockage, a faulty window switch, a defective window motor or regulator, or other problems in other electric systems.

ProblemSolution
Problems with The Fuse, Relay, and Electrical System Check the circuit breaker and relay. Replace them if they are faulty.
Faulty Window Switch Try out resetting. If it doesn’t work out, replace the bad switch.
Broken Window Regulator Inspect the regular and replace if needed.
Faulty Window Motor Replace the window motor in case it’s confirmed to be faulty.
Other Causes Have a general inspection by a Ford technician.

1. Problems with The Fuse, Relay, and Electrical System

When your F-150 window is not going up, or even down, just stuck, a good point to start is checking the electrical system.

One of the first things to check is the fuse and relay. A blown-out fuse or a faulty relay can prevent the window motor from powering up.

Ultimately, these glitches make the switches unresponsive as well.

Typically, power windows do not have a regular fuse. The Ford F-150 uses a 30A circuit breaker instead of a traditional fuse.

It’s a quick fix if the fuse is the issue.

  • Check the fuse for the window in the fuse box. You can usually find the fuse box under the dashboard or in the engine compartment.
  • Using a voltmeter, inspect this circuit breaker and replace it if it’s blown.
  • Also, check the relay to see whether it’s causing the issue.

If everything looks just fine, but the window remains in the same condition, there can be deeper issues like a switch or regulator.

2. Faulty Window Switch

In some cases, the issue isn’t with the electrical system —it can be the window switch itself.

When the switch fails to make proper contact and close the circuit, the door window of your F150 car won’t be able to go up or down.

But don’t worry!

As for the window switch, it is very easy to check its functionality.

If the switch on the driver’s door does not control the stuck window, but the switch on the corresponding door works just fine, it likely means the switch on the driver’s door is bad.

This is also true for the way around.

You can also press and hold the window switch for a few seconds in each direction. If there is a minor glitch or you get lucky, the switch will recalibrate!

Still not working? The easy solution is to replace the faulty window switch.

3. Broken Window Regulator

When you experience this issue in your car, there is a good chance that the window regulator is failing.

If there is a failing or about-to-fail regulator, it makes the window move slowly or get stuck halfway.

In extreme cases, the window can even drop inside the door. You may also hear clicking, grinding, or chattering sounds when the window tries to move with a bad regulator.

If you notice any of these signs, check the regulator. If it is faulty, replace it to fix your window problem.

4. Faulty Window Motor

When the door window of your F150 won’t open or close, or works only occasionally, the window motor may be failing.

In my experience, many power window issues come down to a faulty switch or electrical wiring.

That’s especially true with the wire that runs between the door and the vehicle’s body.

These wires tend to bend every time you open or close the door, which can wear them out over time.

In such cases, the window may work intermittently or stop altogether. While those issues still happen, the newer cars sometimes have motor problems linked to a control module instead.

So, it’s wise always to check the wires and switches first before replacing the motor.

If those are in good shape and the window motor is faulty, replace it to restore normal functionality.

5. Other Causes

Sometimes the windows are not working, and the top of those reasons is not obvious.

It may not be for the fuse, motor, or switches. That’s when you may need a general diagnostic from the Ford F-150 expert.

When the issue doesn’t indicate a specific area, like electrical, mechanical, or software, they will go step by step and find the root cause.

What is the Ford F150 window recall?

In July 2024, Ford recalled over 4,300 F-150 trucks because of the windshield adhesive issues. Here, the windshield glue may not have been applied properly, increasing the risk of coming loose during a crash.

How do you fix a power window that won’t go up or down?

If your power window is stuck, don’t go up or down; check the fuse that powers it. If that is not the case, try out resetting. Just hold the window switch in the ‘up’ and ‘down’ positions for a few seconds.

How do you manually raise a power window?

First, hold the window between your hands. Then push it up slowly. If there is not much of the window sticking up, use your fingers to pull it up a bit so that you can grab it with your hands.

Final Words

All in all, when your Ford F-150 windows are not working, don’t stress out. First, check whether any obvious obstacles are hindering its normal functions.

If that’s not the case, check the fuse, switch, and wiring.

And if the issue still occurs, get your car to a certified Ford mechanic. He will assist you efficiently so that you can get to the bottom of it properly.

  1. Thanks for your info.
It helped find the problem. An unusual one for sure. A deer bumped into my door leaving minor dent. Later i rolled down the backseat window but it would not go up all the way. The cause was a bent door stiffener which blocked the window movement. Btw i have a new power window switch that i will sell for half price.

  2. Thanks for all the great info Kevin! I have an 02 F350 and have had some of those same issues with the RR Pass door. I just replaced the the regulator and motor with new, also new door switch and new main controller switches on drivers door. My window will go up but not down. I will now check all the other items you mentioned in your article. I did notice when i replaced the main switches on the driver door, the lok/out switch was beat up pretty bad from my German Shepherds. That switch on my 02 is seperate from the others. Am going to check out my fuses and relays too. Appreciate reading your article about F150s and so much also relates to my F350.
    Thank You!
